The Rush Center of the Johnson Institute has roots in Dr. Vernon Johnson’s original study on alcoholism at St. Martin’s By The Lake Episcopal Church in Wayzata, Minnesota during the 1960s, Trish Merrill’s pioneering work with Faith Partners lay congregational teams in Austin, Texas and the vision of Stockton Rush to engage clergy in education and healing related to alcohols and drug problems.
From its Service Center in Austin, the Rush Center conducts national outreach, trains team leaders and members, teaches clergy “core competencies,” publishes support material, and provides technical support by phone and web communication.

Irene and Wheelock Whitney Award In 2004, the Johnson Institute created the “Irene and Wheelock Whitney Award” which is presented annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution in promoting the understanding of the combined power of faith and science in addiction prevention and recovery.
